Aquamarine is coined from the Latin term for seawater, "aqua marina"; many mythical stories and legends connect Aquamarine to Mermaid magic. A stone of the "in-between" magical realm of earth and sea, Aquamarine connects us to your Mermaid essence, if you personally feel drawn toward these half-human creatures of the unknown.
Chemically, Aquamarine is the blue variety of Beryl, and is a sister gem to Emerald and Morganite. It's widely available as a faceted gemstone or a tumbled pocket stone, and grows naturally in long, hexagon shaped crystals often embedded in pegmatite rock and mica.
Aquamarine is naturally very light, so deeper shades you find are often heat treated to deepen their hue.
