It often forms natural eight-sided prismatic crystals. Large topaz specimens weighing over 220 pounds have been discovered over the years, along with thousand-carat forms that reside at the Smithsonian. Topaz is derived from "Topazos", which means "to seek", and the Sanskrit word "tapaz", which means "fire". In the middle ages, Topaz was thought to enhance mental powers and prevent insanity.

The word "Citrine" is derived from the French word for lemon, "citron", and the use of this stone is amulets, talismans and rings dates back to 300 B.C.
